Gadh Kalewa Serving the best Cuisines from across Chhattisgarh

Gadh Kalewa literally translates to Food (Kalewa) of Chhattisgarh (Gadh) and offers authentic regional cuisines.

Chhattisgarh has many unexplored facets be it art, culture, tradition and food was not an exception. Gadh Kalewa is a restaurant as well as an exhibition of Chhattisgarh’s art and culture. It first originated on the Mahant Ghasidas Museum’s premise in Raipur. Chhattisgarh is famous across the world as ‘bowl of rice’. Rice is the main staple of the region. It is also the main ingredient in Chhattisgari preparations with a blend of various daals.

Food

Faraa is amongst the favourites which looks like potato sticks but made of rice and served with very interesting chutneys. Similarly, Chausela which is rice poori, bhajiya made from the blend of daal and rice and so on. The place offers a long menu of delicious and yet unfamiliar recipes treasured from Chhattisgarh. Recently, Zomato tied up with this place. So for the foodies this is the link to order Gadh Kalewa recipes right to your doorsteps.

Place

This place has gone a step further to design the experience of Chhattisgarh. The afternoon meal is served in a compound that is made of wrought Iron work. The meal is served on a brass thali which is at-least thrice the weight of regular utensils. Brass plates have obvious health benefits. The meals are prepared by natives of Chhattisgarh.

All this, just to make sure they leave no stone unturned to give the real Chhattisgari experience. Just to let you know that the wrought iron art and bell metal work of Bastar is famous across the world. Also, the tourist visiting Chhattisgarh highly enjoy the wooden inscription of tribal life. Take another look at this art forms, the inscriptions, the design and the characters on the metals and you’ll know how tribes tells their stories.

The Experience

Gadh Kalewa is a concept restaurant serving the known and less known cuisines from Chhattisgarh. Easy as it may sound but that was not the case. Chhattisgarh is relatively unexplored place and gathering the minute details of culture and traditions is still a challenge. The premise was supposed to be built around the concept which is yet not properly understood. It was the first challenge.

Next big challenge was to serve an entirely new menu to Raipur. People in Raipur are not native to Chhattisgarh. They come from various places like Odisha, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and even North & South India. Why will they come to have food at Gadh Kalewa was the question. It seems the answer turned out to be the experience. With this solution, there was no looking back. Undouble, they’ve created a lifetime experience of this amazing Chhattisgarh state.

By G. Swapnil

Hi! I am G. Swapnil, a working professional happily married to G. Divya and I love to go about places, explore what's around me and script them for memories. I've been traveling Chhattisgarh since I came back completing my PG in 2008 from Amity University, Noida. There was lot to wander in Chhattisgarh as it was comparatively unexplored and had been recently identified as a separate state. Leaving Raipur behind on weekends, finding peace on the roads, the horizon and halts it became a passion. Slowly, I started collecting these journeys on Instagram and later founded this travelogue Welcome236. I am excited to know your opinion of the blog and if you want to get in touch with me for suggestions, feedbacks and collabs then email me on wanderlust@welcome236.com. I'll be quick to respond on Instagram DM https://www.instagram.com/welcome236_.
